Locky The Freshwater Fisherman

Haven't been blogging for awhile as I was busy with my parents as they came to Sydney to attend my graduation ceremony and we also travelled to Melbourne for a short holiday trip. So, not back to what will seem like a hectic fishing schedule before I'm heading back to sunny Singapore.

Everytime blogged about my fishing escapade also quite boring right? So this blog I dedicate to my on-and-off fishing partner-in-crime, Rocky (or 'locky', he sometimes like to pronounce 'R' as 'L'..). A very 'singlish-cised' Indonesian. We went to the Nepean River last wednesday to try our luck for last light fishing. There was some traffic delay on the M4 but luckily not a super long one to dampen our spirit. Rock guided me a little as I've forgotten about how to get there since the last time was when I went with Jialiang ages ago. I was determined to get my first bass before I can leave Sydney in peace, lol. Arrived there and first up was walking down to the Rowing Club and I suggested to rock we'll rig up there before heading down towards the weir. So a brief walk down to the weir and I was surprised to see that the weir was resembling those river rapids you'll encounter when rafting in New Zealand! Lol.. Anyway, there were some die-hard idiots wading downstream of the rapid, don't think I'll do it even for a million bucks! The water colour was like kopi and we were thinking to ourselves maybe this would be a wasted trip. Gave up the idea of fishing downstream or near the weir and so decided to walk back up to where we came from. Came upon a spot and thought we'll set up camp. Cast my River2Sea Buggi Pop in black only to find out that the current was strong! Rock set up his corn baits to fish for carps under a float. Whilst basking under the setting sun, decided to take some pics.

This spot proved kinda hard to fish as well as manouvering and so we decided to move down more. At least this patch was quite opened and so we set up our final camp. Rocky rigged up his corn baits whilst we both also did our usual luring. The most interesting phenomenon was whenever an insect or flies dropped on the surface of the water, there'll be some rapids forming around the helpless creature and within moments, there'll be a big splash! It got us both excited that there were indeed bass around slurping on those insects. However, it didn't prove easy on the lure front. I would attempt to lightly cast the buggi hoping that it'll land softly on the surface or even more desperate by moving backwards so as not to spook them with my shadow on water. It was fruitless but until when we heard a screaming reel and Rock's corn baited rod went off! A good fight was ensued and finally we broke the donut jinx of travelling such a long way!

A small carp was captured and although there was no law in NSW that we have to kill the carps (it was considered a pest in Aust), Rock just released it anyway. Continued our luring and Rock tried with the carps again with more burley this time. It was soon getting quite dark and later on, he saw his float bopping up and down slightly and decided to strike it and voila, another carp ran off. But this one briefly snag him just a metre away in the weeds and I quikly told him to free spool. Luckily it came out with some skull dragging and another even smaller carp was landed.

It was completely dark by now. I was either using my buggi surface pop or a small spinner jighead with a gulp watermelon grub to no avail. Suddenly, Rock's certate screamed in protest and his blackhole was bending like no tommorrow! He yelled out this was a powerful fish and his certate was locked drag! A few minutes of fight ensued and we were wondering what the hell it was considering it was already fully dark and didn't realise if this might be a probable bass. But alas, it was a bloody huge Eel!!!!!

Eels eat lures??!! Bloody rocky's a legend man! Taken on a Jackall Cherry which goes to about a metre depth. Told him I also had one and quickly rigged up. Even a one metre lure I could also feel weeds, basket! By then, the mozzies were killing us and so we packed up for a long drive back with me fishless whilst my partner-in-crime came up triumphant.

Whilst I was away in Melbourne with my parents, that fellow sneakily went back to the same spot again and this time round, the intended specie was finally captured. His first Aussie bass was caught on his River2Sea 'chubby-copied' lure. Caught 2 bass somemore! (And a good size carp) KNNBCCB!!! Buay steady!

Well done lah blo! And that's it, I guess that'll probably be the last session I'll ever fish with Rock as he's back to Indo for the entire summer break. By the time he's back for his last uni semester, I'm most likely back in Singapore, for good..
